Most of the world’s media has been impacted in some shape or form by the COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic, and anime is no different. Unfortunately for Digimon fans, Toei has just revealed that the latest anime entry will have to be placed on hold.
Digimon Adventure initially premiered on Japanese television on April 5th of this year, with a simulcast subtitled transmission in English streaming on Crunchyroll. Despite having just gotten its start, Digimon Adventure has been placed on hiatus.
Toei Animation offered up a tweet explaining that both Digimon Adventure and the extremely long-running anime series One Piece will be placed on hold due to the pandemic. Unfortunately, Toei hasn’t offered even an estimate as to when these shows might return to the air, so fans may have to wait a considerable amount of time to continue the Digimon reboot’s adventures.
The news likely doesn’t come as a surprise to those who have been monitoring the impact of the coronavirus in Japan. Japan recently declared a state of emergency for the entire country due to a rising number of infections there. While Digimon fans are no doubt disappointed at the delay, there are at least plenty of existing Digimon games and anime episodes to rewatch.
