You know, Diablo Immortal doesn’t look half bad for a mobile game. Too bad we all still remember that disastrous BlizzCon announcement.
We’re approaching two years since we first found out about Diablo Immortal, Blizzard’s first foray into the mobile action RPG segment. The initial reveal will live forever in infamy as the most tone-deaf announcements in gaming history, followed by the most on-point responses from gamers: “Is this an out-of-season April Fools joke?”
Ah, good times.
But despite losing stock value in both the eyes of gamers and the literal stock market, Diablo Immortal continues to trundle along in development. We got a development trailer at the 2019 BlizzCon (although Blizzard really didn’t mention it during the convention in order to avoid a repeat of 2018 BlizzCon) which showcased some of Diablo Immortal’s spooky environments, character abilities, legendary items, and ultimate attacks.
Now, thanks to ChinaJoy2020, we’ve got a new trailer that shows us everything we say in 2019 but with an actual control overlay this time.
The interface for Diablo Immortal looks about the same as most other mobile RPGs. Your main attack is the largest button in the lower right-hand corner of the screen, while other spells, abilities, and health potions are smaller buttons surrounding it. A map sits in the top right corner, while your health and avatar sit in the top left. This makes the action a little bit obscured compared to PC, but it’s really not that bad.
There are lots of scary demons and cinematic character intros to enjoy in this trailer, although the text is all in Chinese. There’s not much written here that isn’t already explained in the imagery, so don’t worry about it.
There’s also still no release date for Diablo Immortal, but Twinfinite reports that a recent investor call at Blizzard said to expect Diablo Immortal to hit phones in Q3 2020. We should expect to hear news about alpha testing soon.
