In Detroit: Become Human, much of the story is shaped by the player’s choices and actions. And those choices also help determine their standing and affiliation with all the other non-playable characters they encounter. It is developer Quantic Dreams’ most ambitious project to date, especially when you factor in its 2,000-page script that accounts for all the possible branching paths.

Out of the three playable characters, Markus can be considered the main protagonist, being the leader of the android rebellion that is central to the overall narrative. And just like any traditional hero in a story, he also gets an opportunity to score with the ladies. More specifically, he can become romantically involved with a fellow android named North. But doing so involves following a very specific set of actions and dialogue choices, so here’s how to ensure that he plays his cards right.

Who is North?

North is one of the companion characters Markus meets after he arrives at Jericho. Like every other character the player encounters along the adventure, their standing with her is initially neutral. But, based on the choices they make throughout the course of the game, she can either become more friendly or hostile towards them. One of the earliest choices that affect her impression of Markus is when he proposes to Simon, another fellow android, that they steal supplies to help out the various androids in need of repairs.

When she and Markus first meet, she is reluctant to share any details about her past life prior to her arrival at Jericho. As the story progresses and the two grow closer to one another, we get to learn that she was actually an android designated as a sexual partner for patrons of the Eden Club. She is forced to go on the run after she inadvertently strangles one of their clients to death, seeking shelter with the other deviant androids in Jericho.

How to Romance North

The options that help the player get into good standing with North are sprinkled throughout several of the game’s chapters. But in order for them to unlock the romance option, they must first ensure that they maintain, at the barest minimum, a “Friendly” relationship with her.

This can be done by agreeing with most of her suggestions. She generally tends to be more aggressive and resentful towards humans, so any choices made by Markus that reflect that should generally raise her respect for him. What follows are the pivotal scenes and the choices required to ensure that the possibility for their romance stays open.

Jericho Rooftop

There is a scene just before the Freedom March chapter, where Markus and North share a quiet moment together before the mayhem that is about to follow. This is the sequence of events the player needs to take to bond with North during this scene:

  • Ask North about her past once the option is presented. Even though she won’t give a direct answer, this will still open up the necessary dialog tree. Choose the “Understanding” option, after which an on-screen indicator would show the status of your relationship as “companions,” assuming you weren’t already at that point prior to this. Next, choose the “Trust” option and Markus would try to convince North that they need to trust one another since they’ll be marching together soon. Following the above choices would cause North to finally open up to Markus and describe her past. Thereafter, he’ll be given an option to initiate a connection with her. To do that, simply perform the displayed gesture to “Connect.” Sharing Markus’ memories with her would cause her status to move up from “Companion” to “Lover.”

Crossroads

This is the next chapter where players would need to make critical choices in the course of the ongoing romance between Markus and North. In this scene, the three main protagonists of the game have all converged at Jericho for different reasons. But for Markus, he would soon have to contend with an oncoming attack on his people.

  • During the course of the chapter, North informs  Markus of a bomb that has been rigged by a deviant somewhere in the city. When she offers you the detonator for that bomb, choose “Keep” to accept it. Afterward, you are given an option to kiss North. Choose “Kiss” to do so. Later on, when North gets shot by the police, choose “Save North” to rescue her and ensure that she lives beyond that scene. In the aftermath of the attack, Markus and North share another quiet moment together as they all gather in a church and try to plot their next move against the humans. Be sure to ask about her “Wounds” from all the available dialog choices. Doing that would trigger some important lines of dialog, during which she declares her love for Markus and the two of them connect once again.

Battle for Detroit

This is the climactic chapter of the game where, based on the player’s choices thus far, they get to determine the fate of the android revolution. Assuming they’ve been playing their cards right by making all the previously outlined choices and depending on how the scene itself plays out, then they’ll be given a final choice to make when Markus and the last remaining androids get surrounded by a SWAT team.

Select “Kiss North” out of the available options to initiate a scenario where Markus and North share a final kiss. The SWAT team would momentarily lower their weapons, no doubt shocked by the gesture, before proceeding to open fire on the androids. It is a bittersweet ending, for sure, but one that is quite poignant and strangely poetic.
