Demolition derby fans have reason to rejoice this week, as Destruction AllStars has finally released on PS Plus as a free game. This PlayStation exclusive puts players in a car crushing arena where only the most vicious competitors come out on top.

With so many mechanics unique to the experience, it can be confusing to grasp the game’s expansive abilities and mechanics. Luckily, TheGamer has an explanation for all the systems in Destruction AllStars, including Breaker Mode.

What Is A Breaker?

Breakers are unique abilities that each character has. These are game-changing power-ups that help decimate the competition. Riders and their signature vehicles both sport unique Breakers. Because there are two separate Breakers, they can independently be used. Jian’s Character Breaker allows him to leave mines around on the field that stun and damage enemy vehicles, while his Morningstar covers itself in spike to impale incoming cars. No two characters have the same Breakers, so explore the roster to see which stand out.

How To Charge Them

There are several ways to charge Breakers in Destruction AllStars. The most straightforward way to charge these moves is to deal damage to opponents and rack up points. While car combat is a solid way to accumulate Breaker Energy, the quickest way is to retrieve the Gems scattered across the map. There are a handful of Gems to look out for during matches:

  • Red Gems: The regular booster that slightly boosts Breaker Energy Red Gem Clusters: These unique spawns completely charge a Character Breaker Blue Gem Clusters: This special spawn completely charges a Vehicle Breaker

Only riders on foot can grab these boosters, so make sure to alternate car combat with parkour.

Character Breakers

Character Breakers provide riders with several bonuses:

  • Increased Movement Speed A Double Jump

While every Character Breaker has unique characteristics, these bonuses exist for each member of the roster. Some Character Breakers are offensive, like Lupita’s Wildfire. This leaves a trail of fire in Lupita’s wake that damages anything that comes in contact with it. Others are defensive, like Shift’s Cypher, a move that renders him nearly invisible while removing him from the map. The core mechanics may be the same, but there is plenty to explore for each AllStar Circuit member.

Vehicle Breakers

Vehicle Breakers give a handful of perks to players:

  • A Hero Vehicle that cannot be hijacked Special Moves unique to each Hero Vehicle

Each Vehicle Breaker is unique, just like the Character Breakers are. Lupita’s Hero Vehicle is a sleek car designed to move quickly. Its special ability, Wildfire, allows her to leave a trail of fire that damages opposing cars when they come in contact with far more impact than when she’s on foot. Use these Breakers to eviscerate adversaries and rack up points quickly.

Find The Right Breaker For Your Playstyle

Because none of the game’s breakers are alike, it’s up to the player to find the character that best suits their play style. Offensive players may like Lupita, while defensive users could enjoy Shift. With 16 characters up for grabs, it’s worth exploring the large variety of options in the coming weeks.
