When Destruction AllStars was originally announced, there was little fanfare; it was almost buried beneath a mountain of other titles from the PlayStation 5 reveal showcase. Knowing this, Sony took the feedback in stride, deciding to delay the game and offer it for free in hopes of fostering a lasting player base. This decision led to the first party releasing on PlayStation Plus in February 2021, with players raving over the experience.
Unlike other demolition derbies, Destruction AllStars melds parkour gameplay with car combat, and players need to master both aspects to succeed in this unique first-party title. Check out some of these tips to up your out-of-car experience and hop ahead of the competition.
Balance Traversal and Car Combat
Staying in vehicles may seem enticing, but it isn’t the way to win. Skilled players will need to be adept at mobility both in and out of cars. Try not to stay in one machine too long, as they’ll break down after too much damage if cars are low on health, bail, and find a new one. It’s also much harder to be hit on foot than when in a two-ton wrecking ball. Take advantage of this information to confuse, outwit, and outmaneuver adversaries on the track.
Grab Gems On Foot
Moving on foot comes with several pros. One of these boons is the ability to harvest Gems. Grabbing gems boosts the rate at which a character’s Breakers charge. Gems impact character and Vehicle Breakers. Make sure to hop out of vehicles during the match to collect this resource, as Breakers are abilities that can turn the tide of a match.
Wall Run For Breathing Room
When car combat gets claustrophobic, break out and do some wall running. Vehicles can’t pursue players when they’re up this high (for the most part), so take this chance to collect your thoughts and weigh the options. Walls are often lined with Gems, so snag a few on the way to another vehicle. Be aware that walls can collapse and turn into platforms and stifle character momentum.
Jump On Opponent Cars To Hijack And Wreck Them
Need a ride? Why not take a car from a rival rider? Immediately after evading an attack, drivers can hijack a car. Jump into the air and press Triangle near a vehicle to initiate a takeover. Hitchhikers and Drivers will battle for control via a button prompt mini-game. Press the face buttons as they appear faster than a rival can shake you off to snag their ride. Once a car is commandeered, a player can either enact a Wreckover or a Takeover. Takeovers let players steal a car, and Wreckovers immediately destroy a rival’s vehicle.
Stay Out Of Open Areas
The most dangerous place for a rider to be is out in the open. Try to stay in the air or tight spaces. Avoid areas without traversal tools; dodge (circle) if cars get close, picking fights wisely.
