After weeks of rumors and speculation, THQ Nordic has confirmed at last that Destroy All Humans! is receiving a full remake of the original game. Many speculated that the project was in fact a sequel to the later games in the series, so the announcement of a remake is a bit of a surprise, but no less welcome by fans of the original game.

THQ has gone on to specify that Destroy All Humans! will be an “exact” remake, so the story should be identical. However, there are likely to be changes that can be considered quality of life improvements. Considering that the original game was released in 2005, there are most certainly improvements that could be made without affecting the story, playstyle, or weapons in the game.

For those unfamiliar with the title, Destroy All Humans! is an open-world action-adventure game that originally launched for the PlayStation 2 and Xbox. Most of the action occurs on Earth where the alien Furon Cryptosporidium, also known as Crypto, is given the task of gathering Furon DNA locked inside human brain stems, all to save the race from cloning themselves into extinction.

As the name of the game implies, your objective is to destroy a lot of humans under the guise of later extracting those precious brain stems. To do so, players will have access to a flying saucer with a Death Ray, a tractor beam to lift people, objects, and even buildings to then throw elsewhere. When on foot, Crypto will make use of a Zap-O-Matic to shock his enemies, the Anal Probe that fires a powerful rod into a target’s rectum, the Disintegrator Ray that leaves only a skeleton behind, and finally the Ion Detonator, which is similar to a small grenade launcher.

As if those weapons were not enough, Crypto also has a jet pack to boost around and terrorize humans with ease, and the ability to temporarily assume the appearance of a human, allowing him safe movement among most humans.

Hopefully this remake well do well enough by industry standards to warrant either a sequel later on, or a remake of the sequel that was made for the original game.

THQ also announced today the upcoming release of Darksiders Genesis with a shift in the series from pure action style gaming to a top-down dungeon crawling experience similar to the Diablo series.

In the meantime, those who want to replay the first game in preparation for the remake, or those who simply have not experienced it can do so now. The original Destroy All Humans! is available on both the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.

The remake is set for a release in 2020 for Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.
