In a livestream from Bungie today, information was detailed regarding what is coming next for Destiny 2. While the livestream entailed things such as the new Season of Arrivals and Beyond Light, Bungie’s presentation also included a moment of silence to honor George Floyd.
Bungie later emphasized that we need to do more than simply “listen to the cries” of hurt communities to eliminate systemic racism. The video then spends about 7 minutes on a slide that shows websites for five different organizations fighting racial injustice, including Black Lives Matter, The Antiracist Research & Policy Center, the Equal Justice Initiative, ColorLines, and Showing Up for Racial Justice.
Of course, Bungie’s decision to join the fight against racial injustice comes after a number of actions made by other gaming companies. Rockstar Games previously shut down the servers for Red Dead Online and Grand Theft Auto Online to honor George Floyd. Further, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare had been displaying messages supporting the Black Lives Matter movement.
And, of course, it isn’t just limited to these three instances. Gaming industry giants from Sony to Microsoft to Riot Games to Naughty Dog all shared their condolences for the death of George Floyd and spread positive messages about fighting systemic racism throughout communities.
While Floyd’s death was incredibly tragic and showed that there is a lot of progress to be made before achieving full equality, it is enlightening that so many are unifying behind the fight against racial injustice. With as many people and organizations as there are right now behind the movement, there seems to be an opportunity available to make positive changes for the benefit of racial equality.
